What safety precautions should I take for sailing with children?

How do you provide safety for your family, especially when sailing with children and what equipment, emergency procedures, and onboard safety measures would you know about?

Ensuring the safety of your family, especially children, is paramount when sailing. Start by investing in quality life jackets suitable for each child's size and weight, and insist on their consistent use while on deck.

Familiarise your children with emergency procedures, such as man-overboard drills and proper use of safety equipment.  Remeber, it could be YOU who goes overboard so everyone should know what to do in that scenario.

We drilled our kids in man-overboard procedure and when faced with a genuine MOB from a ferry in Greece they knew what to do. It was very reassuring to see them instinctively react in an emergency.

Secure the boat with netting and firm guardrails to prevent accidental falls, and designate specific areas as child-safe zones. Never leave a child alone on deck. Keep a well-stocked first aid kit on board, tailored to address common ailments and potential injuries.

Regularly inspect and maintain all safety equipment, including life rafts and fire extinguishers. Implement a clear communication plan, ensuring that everyone on board, including children, understands emergency signals and evacuation procedures.

It's essential to strike a balance between adventure and safety, fostering a culture of awareness and preparedness for the entire family.
